Please read the facts below and comment we will really appreciate your help.

· Approximately 70% of home fires happen at night – between the hours of 10pm and 6am. Smoke alarms are a necessity for giving occupants early warning and time to escape the home safely.
· Traditional smoke alarms are ineffective in waking children. Research shows that 2 out of 3 children will sleep through the beeping of a regular smoke alarm.*1
· A familiar voice reliably wakes a child. Additional studies show that children wake up to the sound of a family member’s voice more than 96% of the time. *2
· Traditional smoke alarms can cause children to panic. If children do awake to the sound of a normal smoke alarm, they are typically disoriented or frightened and have an escape time of over 5 minutes. *3
· A familiar voice keeps children calm and prevents panic. Upon hearing their parent’s voice act as the alarm children react more appropriately and are reminded what to do, with an average escape time of 38 seconds! *3
· Customizable instructions work for every family and every home. The vocal smoke alarm allows parents or guardians to record personalized escape instructions that can be customized for any household floor plan or language.
· Fire drill feature facilitates practice. Unique to the vocal smoke alarm is its fire drill feature, which enables parents to practice home fire drills easily with their families. The fire drill feature is fitted with a time-delay function when activated, simulating a real-life emergency experience.
· Directional alarm speaker “Aims” your voice at their pillow. This exclusive feature allows the high-quality speaker to be aimed directly at the child’s sleeping area to help ensure the wake up command and instructions are heard during an emergency.
· LOUD 85dbs tone alternates with your voice. The vocal smoke alarm sounds the familiar voice first, which then alternates with a temporal tone siren at a loud 85dbs output to help awaken children from deep sleep.
· Easy to install. The vocal smoke alarm installs easily on most surfaces and includes mounting hardware and 4 AA batteries.

Washing machine fire sparks advice and launch of the vocal smoke alarm

Wiltshire fire and rescue have issued another warning to householders to fit smoke alarms after a blaze in a washing machine caused damage to a house on Friday afternoon.

Two fire appliances from Salisbury attended a kitchen fire in Salisbury. The fire is believed to have started in a washing machine. The kitchen was severely damaged by heat and smoke.

A man was asleep upstairs and had a very lucky escape when he woke up and smelt smoke. No working smoke alarm was fitted in the property. A smoke alarm had been removed a week ago after the battery failed but it had not been replaced.

advertisement

A fire and rescue spokesman said: "A smoke alarm is your early warning system, which will detect and alert you to a fire. If there is a fire in your home, a smoke alarm will give you valuable time to escape. The noise of your smoke alarm should alert you even when you are asleep. The majority of deaths in house fires happen between 10pm and 8am. "

Studies in America have recently reported that conventional smoke alarms cannot reliable awaken children under 16, due to their very deep sleeping patterns. In fact university research shows that 2 out of 3 kids will sleep through the sound of a traditional smoke alarm.

PSC are launching the vocal smoke alarm for more details please email paul@pscfiresafety.com we think this is really an incredible improvement in helping saves lives of children in the event of a fire.

When fitting smoke alarms follow the manufacturers instructions.

The best place to put a smoke alarm is on the ceiling, as near to the centre of the room as possible.

The smoke alarm should be placed at least 30 centimeters way from any light or wall.

Don't fit smoke alarms in the kitchen or bathroom where they can be accidentally triggered.

The more smoke alarms you have fitted in your house the better protected you will be.

Make sure you have at least one smoke alarm per level.

The hallway and the landing are ideal locations.

Make sure you look after your smoke alarm Test your alarm once a week.

Change the battery once a year (unless it is a 10-year alarm) Replace your smoke alarm unit every 10 years.

'Oven chips could save your life' say firefighters

Oven chips could save your life, according to PSC.

PSC is marking National Chip Week by urging people to cook chips safely.

Paul Coughlan said: “We are urging local residents not to use traditional chip pans as they can cause fatal fires.

“There are other options for cooking chip so keep you and your family safe and opt for an alternative.”

Around 8,200 chip pan fires result in 31 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries in the UK each year, so it is vital to reduce fire hazards and cook safely.

PSC say the safest options are to ditch the chip pan and choose oven or microwave chips, buy from the local chippy, or invest in an electric deep fryer.

For advice on fire safety visit www.firekills.gov.uk or call the PSC 01455 557877 down load free advice from www.pscfiresafety.com

A Healthier England from 1st July 2007

From 1st of July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smokefree. A smokefree England will ensure a healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from secondhand smoke.

What do I do checklist

Employers, managers and those in charge of smokefree premises and vehicles will need to:

  • display 'no smoking' signs in smokefree premises,
  • take reasonable steps to ensure that staff, customers/members and visitors are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smokefree
  • ensure that no one smokes in smokefree premises or vehicles

You may also want to take these supportive measures:

  • remove ashtrays from smokefree areas
  • develop a smokefree policy in consultation with staff
  • provide your staff and customers with support to quit smoking
  • ensure that your staff and customers know where they can smoke if they choose to

Smokefree England have produced a brochure that briefly explains how the new smokefree regulations are likely to work and also some useful factsheets. These can be downloaded from this from www.smokefreeengland.co.uk

PSC have signed up to support smoke free England and have arranged for new signs to be available for vehicles and places of employment to order your signs email paul@pscfiresafety.com we can email examples if required.

Vehicle self adhesive double sided signs £3.59 each

A4 rigid plastic no smoking sign £8.79 each

Smoke free bars and clubs sign £12.43 each
